Kindergarten FAQ

What is kindergarten?

Welcome to kindergarten

The first year of school is always an exciting adventure for the entire family. We would like to encourage you to become involved in whatever way is possible for your family. Maybe you can come in and help with classroom projects or perhaps you could help by making materials at home ready for classroom use. Each family has special talents and exciting interests to share which helps to make the class more varied and exciting than any teacher can do alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about the bus?

Children riding the bus must wear the badge received from the school board. This badge identifies your children throughout the year. If there is any change in where your child is to go after school, please send me a note to school, or call Ms. Guy (our school secretary) early in the day. We must be notified by an adult of any change in plans.

What are the school hours?

The school hours are from 8:05a.m. to 14:30.

Morning recess begins at 10:15 until 10:30.

Lunch begins at 11:30 until 12:30.

Dismissal bell rings at 14:30.

Please click here for more details.

What can a parent do to help?

There are so many things a parent can do at home to help their child. Here are a few ideas:

At home, please read to your child daily.

Help your child to get organized for school, perhaps the night before.

Make sure your child has lots of sleep. Bedtime for kindergarten students should be 7:00 PM.

Review the vocabulary with your child.

Ask your child what happened at school. Discuss the events.

Speak to your child in French.

Practice the notions being taught at school. This will help your child understand the concepts more quickly.

Breakfast is important if your child is to be an efficient learner.

What if I have a question?

All of us here at Westpark School would like to encourage parents Parent - School Communication. If you have a question or a problem, please feel free to send me a note. I will try my best to respond within a few days. You may also leave a mesage with Mrs. Lawrence at 684-1418. She will take the message.

What does my child need to bring to school everyday?

1. A regular size backpack marked clearly with your child's name.

2. Pocket folder with zip lock bag.

3. Lunch

I will be sending home a supply list the first week of school. Please refer to the List of Supplies.

What is the snack program?

The kindergarten classes have decided to implement a Daily Snack Program, whereby all children will be required to bring a snack  that falls into a specific food category. A nutritional snack which teaches children good eating habits is essential. To ensure a variety of healthy snacks, the week has been divided into different ideas of the food groups (i.e vegetables, fruits, dairy products, bread and cereals, kinder cooking projects).

Please send your child with his/her own juice each day.

Due to severe peanut allergies, please do not send snacks which are peanut-based or may have traces or peanuts in them. It is extremely important for our allergy students.
